Types of Spinal Manipulation
The most frequently used chiropractic technique is spinal manipulation. During spinal manipulation, sometimes you can hear an audible pop. This occurs when the chiropractors hands apply a sudden force to a joint. The purpose of spinal manipulation is to restore joint function. Our chiropractors may choose spinal manipulation when you are in acute pain or their condition is an in an acute stage.
There is a wide range of spinal manipulation techniques that can be performed. Three of the more common approaches are:
- The “activator method”. The activator is a handheld spring-loaded manual tool that the chiropractic actor uses while the patient lies face down on the adjustment table. The chiropractor will evaluate the patient’s leg length and adjust the patient’s spine and joints with the activator tool.
- The Cox Flexon distraction. This is a gentle adjustment that requires the chiropractor to apply gentle stretch to the lower spine using gentle repetitive, slow movements such as a rocking motion.
- The Toggle drop. The chiropractor takes advantage of gravity. He will cross hands, one on top of the other, and press down quickly on an area of the spine while the drop table falls. The table has different sections that can be raised or dropped where the spine needs to be manipulated.
